By the Night as it conceals (the light);
1وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ
By the Day as it appears in glory;
2وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ
By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-
3وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ
Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.
4إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ
So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),
5فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ
And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-
6وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ
We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.
7فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ
But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,
8وَأَمَّا مَن بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ
And gives the lie to the best,-
9وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ
We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;
10فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ
Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).
11وَمَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ مَالُهُ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰ
Verily We take upon Us to guide,
12إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ
And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.
13وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْآخِرَةَ وَالْأُولَىٰ
Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;
14فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ
None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones
15لَا يَصْلَاهَا إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى
Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.
16الَّذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-
17وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى
Those who spend their wealth for self-purification,
18الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ
And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,
19وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُ مِن نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰ
Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of their Lord Most High;
20إِلَّا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْأَعْلَىٰ
And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
21وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ
